Currency
The official currency in Greece is euro. The word comes from the name of Europe, which is of Greek origin. This might have served as an excuse why Greece is the only country among those of euro-zone not to call one hundredth part of euro cent as it should be, according to the member states convention, but to use a name of its own. Greeks have revived the old name of their ancient coin that as a result of inflation had long ceased to exist and call euro cent lepta. All major credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and many cosmopolitan boutiques. You can also easily exchange travelers’ checks at almost all banks and post offices. Banks are normally open Monday-Thursday 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Fridays 8 a.m.-1.30 p.m., closed on weekend and official public holidays. Most banks have ATM machines that accept cards on the Plus system.
